Fall in North Georgia is more than a few weekends of peak leaves. In the Ellijay and Blue Ridge mountains, fall begins with apple season and cooler September mornings, builds into the excitement of October festivals, and finishes with some of the most beautiful mountain color of the year in late October and early November.

So, when is the best time to visit North Georgia in the fall? It depends on what kind of getaway you want.

Come in late September or early October for apples, outdoor adventures and fewer crowds. Visit during the middle of October if you want to experience Ellijay’s famous apple festivals. Or wait until late October and the first week of November if colorful mountain views are at the top of your list.

Late September & Early October: Apples & Fewer Crowds

One of our favorite times to visit Ellijay and Blue Ridge is before the busiest October weekends arrive.

By late September, apple season is well underway. Mornings are becoming cooler, evenings feel like fall, and the mountains are still covered in a vibrant green blanket with the first hints of changing color beginning to appear.

If you want to pick apples, explore the mountains and enjoy the area at a more relaxed pace, don’t overlook this part of the season.

Go Apple Picking in Ellijay

Gilmer County is known as Georgia’s Apple Capital, and Highway 52 East takes you right through the heart of Ellijay’s apple country.

B.J. Reece Orchards is a particularly good option for guests traveling with dogs. Leashed dogs are welcome in the orchards, although they aren’t permitted inside the market or petting zoo. U-pick apple season generally runs through September and October, depending on apple availability.

You’ll also find longtime local favorites including R & A Orchards, Panorama Orchards and Aaron Family Orchards along the Ellijay apple-country route.

Different apple varieties ripen throughout the season, so check with the orchard before your visit if there’s a particular variety you’re hoping to pick.

And don’t leave apple country without trying some of the things that make an Ellijay fall trip complete — fresh cider, apple bread, fried pies and, of course, apple cider donuts.

Spend Some Time in Downtown Ellijay

Historic Downtown Ellijay is worth more than a quick drive through.

Walk around the square, browse locally owned shops, stop for coffee or lunch, and then head out toward the orchards or back into the mountains.

Late September and early October are especially nice for combining a morning in apple country with an afternoon exploring downtown.

Find a Dog-Friendly Patio

Your dog doesn’t have to spend the entire vacation waiting for you back at the cabin.

Reece’s Cider Company is a dog-friendly stop in Ellijay’s apple country, and several local wineries and breweries also welcome dogs in designated areas.

Engelheim Vineyards welcomes well-behaved leashed dogs, Ott Vineyards allows leashed dogs in its outdoor areas, and Cartecay River Brewing Co. is another pet-friendly local stop.

Pet policies can change, so it’s always a good idea to check with an individual business before heading out with your dog.

Why Visit North Georgia in Late September or Early October?

You’ll get apple season, cooler mountain evenings, plenty of outdoor activities and the beginning of fall — without planning your entire trip around the busiest festival weekends.

And there’s something beautiful about seeing the mountains while they’re still mostly green, knowing the big color show is just beginning.

Mid-October: Georgia Apple Festival Season in Ellijay

October and apples go hand in hand in Ellijay.

The Georgia Apple Festival is one of the area’s biggest annual events and draws visitors from across the Southeast.

For 2026, the Georgia Apple Festival is scheduled for:

October 10–11, 2026

October 17–18, 2026

The main festival is held at the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds and features hundreds of vendors, handmade arts and crafts, demonstrations, food and plenty of apple treats.

Should You Visit During the Georgia Apple Festival?

If experiencing the festival is part of your North Georgia vacation, absolutely. It’s an Ellijay tradition.

Just know before you come that these are some of the busiest weekends of the entire fall season. Expect more traffic, busy orchards and plenty of other visitors enjoying the mountains.

Give yourself extra travel time, head to the festival early, and don’t try to pack too much into one day.

Then come back to the cabin, put your feet up and enjoy a quiet evening in the mountains.

Here’s one of the best local tips we can give you:

You don’t have to visit during the Georgia Apple Festival to experience apple season in Ellijay.

The orchards don’t disappear when the festival ends, and they don’t suddenly appear when it begins.

If your priority is apple picking, mountain scenery and a relaxing cabin getaway rather than attending the festival itself, consider late September, early October, weekdays during October, or dates after the second festival weekend.

You’ll still find apples, cider, fried pies, mountain scenery and cool fall evenings — but your getaway can have a very different pace.

Is the Georgia Apple Festival Dog Friendly?

This is important for anyone planning a pet-friendly North Georgia vacation.

Dogs are not permitted at the main Georgia Apple Festival at the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds, with the exception of service animals.

But don’t leave your pup out of the fall fun just yet.

Visit the Dog-Friendly Apple Arts Festival in Downtown Ellijay

The Apple Arts Festival takes place in Downtown Ellijay during the same two weekends as the Georgia Apple Festival.

Even better for our guests: the downtown festival is pet friendly and free to attend.

You’ll find arts and crafts, food and vendors while also being within walking distance of Downtown Ellijay’s shops and restaurants.

If you’re visiting the mountains with your dog, this is a great alternative to the main fairgrounds festival — and an easy way for your four-legged family members to be part of your fall weekend.

Late October & Early November: Peak Fall Color in North Georgia

Don’t assume fall in North Georgia is over when the Apple Festival ends.

For visitors whose main goal is fall foliage, some of the most beautiful days of the entire season may still be ahead.

When Do Fall Leaves Peak in North Georgia?

Peak fall color in the North Georgia mountains typically occurs from late October into early November, although Mother Nature sets the exact schedule each year.

Elevation and weather both make a difference. Higher elevations generally begin changing first, with the color working its way into lower elevations.

That means there isn’t one magical “peak leaf day” for the entire region.

It’s also why we encourage visitors not to overlook the last days of October and the first week of November. Some years, those can be spectacular times to experience fall color around Ellijay and Blue Ridge.

Take a North Georgia Fall Scenic Drive

One of the easiest ways to enjoy fall color is simply to get in the car and explore.

The roads connecting Ellijay, Cherry Log and Blue Ridge offer mountain scenery throughout the trip. You can also venture onto smaller mountain roads, explore the Aska area near Blue Ridge, or spend an afternoon driving through the Chattahoochee National Forest.

Don’t worry about rushing from attraction to attraction. Part of the fun is turning down a road simply because the view looks interesting.

Go Hiking With Your Dog

Cooler temperatures make late October and early November a wonderful time to explore North Georgia on foot.

The Blue Ridge area provides access to the Aska Adventure Area, Benton MacKaye Trail and miles of surrounding national forest trails.

There are also plenty of opportunities around Ellijay to get outside and enjoy the season.

If you’re hiking with a dog, check the rules for the specific trail or recreation area before you go and keep your dog leashed where required.

Make the Cabin Part of Your Fall Vacation

You don’t have to fill every hour of a North Georgia getaway with activities.

Some of our favorite fall moments happen right at the cabin.

Drink your morning coffee overlooking the mountains. Listen to the river from the porch. Let the dogs explore the fenced yard while leaves drift down around them. Come home from a day in Ellijay or Blue Ridge and soak in the hot tub as the evening turns cool.

Peak fall color in the North Georgia mountains often extends from late October into early November. Exact timing varies from year to year, so don’t write off November when you’re planning a leaf-peeping trip.
